According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of traffic crashes involving a bicyclist or pedestrian in the U.S. has been increasing since 2009. In 2017, there were 5,977 pedestrians and 783 bicyclists killed in motor vehicle crashes. Drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists are safer when they comply with traffic laws and correctly use roadway facilities. Common noncompliance includes motorists failing to yield; pedestrians and bicyclists failing to follow traffic signs and signals; and walking or riding in improper locations such as the wrong side of the road. Here are some tips for bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers:
- Obey posted speed limits.
- Use crosswalks, especially at night.
- Cyclists should use designated bike lanes if available, don't ride on the sidewalk or against traffic.
- Pedestrians and cyclists should use lights/reflectors when travelling at night.
- Drive, walk and ride sober; being impaired by alcohol/drugs increases the likelihood of an accident for all three groups.
- Bicyclists should ALWAYS wear a properly fit helmet.
- Motorists should give cyclists room; do not pass too closely.
