The Fountain Valley Police Department would like to congratulate Sergeants Kurt Ulrich and Jose Maldonado on their retirement from service.
Sergeant Ulrich began his career with the Fountain Valley Police Department as a Reserve Officer in September 1988 and was hired as a full-time Officer in December 1989. Kurt promoted to the rank of Senior Officer in November 2002 and was then promoted to the rank of Sergeant in September 2005. Sergeant Ulrich worked a variety of assignments, including Patrol, Field Training Officer, Motor Officer, Collision Investigator, Motorcycle Instructor, SWAT Sniper, Rangemaster, Department Firearms Instructor, and Personnel and Training Sergeant. Sergeant Ulrich was awarded the "Auto Theft Officer of the Year" award in 1990 and was selected as the Department’s Officer of the Year in 2002 by his peers. Sergeant Ulrich was also a recipient of the Department’s Purple Heart Medal in 2010 and Medal for Valor in 2011 for his actions in defense of fellow Officers against an armed suspect.
Before joining the Fountain Valley Police Department, Sergeant Maldonado served eight years in the United States Marine Corps, where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Maldonado joined the Fountain Valley Police Department in July 1992. Jose promoted to the rank of Senior Officer in February 2002 and then promoted to the rank of Sergeant in May 2008. Sergeant Maldonado’s work assignments included Patrol, Special Enforcement Team (gangs), Field Training Officer, SWAT, and he was a member of the Department’s first Honor Guard. In 2001, Sergeant Maldonado was awarded the "Auto Theft Officer of the Year" award.
