While you can count on clean, safe, reliable water when you turn on the tap, water is not limitless. The drought is a serious reminder that we must continue to work together to ensure our water supplies remain reliable.
Fountain Valley residents and businesses can make a difference every day by adhering to the City’s permanent water conservation requirements listed below
- Outdoor watering is limited to no more than 15 minutes per station per day and is prohibited between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- Watering that causes more than incidental water runoff is prohibited.
- Watering during or within 48 hours after measurable rainfall is prohibited.
- Washing down hard or paved surfaces, including sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking areas, tennis courts, patios, or alleys, is prohibited except when necessary to alleviate safety or sanitary hazards.
- New plants should be drought tolerant.
- Leaks, breaks, or other malfunctions must be fixed within 72-hours of discovery or notification.
- Fountains and decorative water features must use recirculated water.
- Washing of vehicles is prohibited, except with the use of a hand-held bucket or similar container, a hand-held hose equipped with an automatic shut-off nozzle, or at a commercial car wash.
- Swimming pools and spas shall not be emptied and refilled except to prevent or repair structural damage or to comply with public health regulations.
- Commercial lodging establishments must provide customers the option of not having towels and linen laundered daily.
- Food service facilities are required to use water-conserving pre-rinse spray valves, serve drinking water only upon request, and other miscellaneous requirements.
These requirements are in place at all times to promote the efficient use of water and reduce or eliminate waste of water in the City. Anyone who violates these regulations will be issued a warning for the first violation and will be subject to fines of up to $1,000 for continued violations. For complete details and specific construction-related restrictions, refer to FVMC 14.18.040.
Making simple changes, like installing water-efficient devices, adding mulch to flower and vegetable beds, and turning off the faucet when it’s not in use can also make a difference.
