Summer

August is one of the hottest months of the year. Now is the time to take steps to prepare for the heat and learn how to deal with the higher temperatures. Here are a few tips on how to prepare before a heatwave strikes:

  • Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers. Outdoor awnings or louvers can reduce the heat inside your home by up to 80%.
  • Install temporary window reflectors between windows and drapes to reflect heat back outside.
  • Weather-strip doors and sills to keep cool air in.

During periods of extreme heat:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
  • Stay on the lowest floor if air conditioning is not available.
  • Consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings (libraries, movie theaters, malls).
  • Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day. Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat and take frequent brakes.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
  • Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning or live alone.

In addition to the above tips, ensure that you NEVER leave children or pets in vehicles. Even with windows rolled down, it only takes minutes for your vehicle to heat up to dangerous temperatures. On an 80 degree day, the inside of a vehicle can reach 109 degrees within 20 minutes. These temperatures can be deadly for anyone, especially children and pets.

Always look before you lock!
