Cold weather, wind and the threat of rain were no match for over 100 third grade students from Ethan Allen Elementary School who were eager to celebrate Arbor Day with the City of Fountain Valley on March 7, 2019. Although the event was scheduled to take place at Allen Park, City and school staff simply moved the event inside to the school’s multipurpose room when the weather was uncooperative.

Students from Mrs. Morgan’s, Mrs. Thetford’s, Mrs. DeMaria’s and Mrs. Ferris’s classes joined Marco Garcia, the City’s arborist, to learn about the many benefits of trees, including oxygen creation and cooling the planet. They also got to meet Council Member Kim Constantine and Mayor Pro Tem Cheryl Brothers, who read the official Arbor Day Proclamation. City staff will coordinate with the school to plant a total of 8 new trees in neighboring Allen Park at a later date when the weather settles down.

This event is just one of the many ways the City works with the community to build awareness of the importance of trees. Fountain Valley residents who want to assist with the City’s reforestation efforts, can contact the Public Works Department at City Hall or by calling 714-593-4433 to arrange to have a parkway tree planted in front of their homes for just $35!
