Planning and Building Director

The City welcomes new Planning & Building Director, Brian James. Brian will join the City management team in January 2019. Below is a biography on Brian.

I was raised in Redondo Beach. I graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in City and Regional Planning. Aquatic sports played a major role in my youth and, thankfully, I am still able to enjoy some ocean and water activities. I have worked in the planning profession for 27 years, both in the public and private sectors. I started at the City of Huntington Beach and then went to the City of Santa Barbara. I then worked for a planning firm, now called PlaceWorks, for 15 years managing projects for private sector and public sector clients. During this period, I had three different contracts with Fountain Valley (circulation element; Warner-Newhope Specific Plan; and the stormwater management section of the Municipal Code). Coming back to the public sector, I was the Planning Director for the City of Industry and most recently the Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Hawthorne.

I look forward to meeting all of you and building a strong working relationship.
